Bio

Maria Ezcurra is an artist, educator and mother born in Argentina, raised in Mexico City, and living and working in Tiohtià:ke-Montreal. Her visual research focuses on the cultural power of personal objects, the social construction of gender through clothing, memory, identity, belonging and immigration, often from a participatory perspective. Textiles -a central element of her work- are for her a sculptural material and a performative resource that have innumerable formal benefits and symbolic possibilities. By interweaving social and personal experiences from an intersectional perspective, her sculptures and installations represent the multiple and complex relationships involved in the construction of personal and collective identities. Maria has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City and the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo at UNAM (Mexico), the Carl Freedman Gallery (UK), the Nuit Blanche and Sur Gallery (Toronto, Canada), the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Art Souterrain and the artists' centers OBORO, La Centrale Powerhouse, as well as Projet Casa (Montreal, Canada). She has also had the opportunity to participate in several artist residencies, including Adélard (2022) and 3e impérial, centre d'essai en art actuel (2023) and is a founding member of the art collective Intervals, a group of artists and cultural workers interested in the social role of art. Maria has taught art classes at various universities and organizations in Mexico and Canada for the past 20 years and has developed various public, participatory and community art projects in diverse contexts. After completing a PhD in Art Education at Concordia University, she worked as an artist in residence in the Faculty of Education at McGill University, where she currently teaches. Her career has been recognized with the Prix de la Diversité en Arts Visuels from the Montreal Arts Council (2019), the Powerhouse Award (2022) and, most recently, she was a finalist for the Prix d'Art Actuel from the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec (2023).
